Description
Provides instruction, evaluation, and follow-up in the areas of Adult Basic Education (ABE), High School Equivalency (HSE, formerly known as GED® ) and/or English Language Acquisition (ELA/ESL). Instructs adult students in one of the above categories using the approved curriculum, with an expectation of meeting or exceeding program goals. Another expectation of this position is the necessary completion of student attendance on a weekly basis as well as the completion of necessary paperwork in a timely manner as required by the Adult Education department.
Examples of Duties
A. Conducts appropriate instructional activities for assigned classes. Implements differentiated instruction and computer-aided instruction in all classes. Incorporates career awareness and career development activities in all classes which is included in the curriculum.
B. Develops familiarity with curriculum and learning objectives of Adult Education courses. Develops appropriate lesson plans and maintains an educational plan for each student.
C. Develops lesson plans that align with the curriculum.
D. Works with department to administer standardized assessments.
E. Evaluates student performance and maintains attendance, student progress, and grade records for assigned classes.
F. Develops and implements strategies to aid student retention. Maintains student follow-up.
G. Cultivates an expectation that students will transition to post-secondary education and/or employment.
H. Coordinates class activities with the literacy program, as appropriate. Assists in tutor training, and works with program/support volunteers.
I. Completes all necessary record keeping for the position in a thorough, accurate and timely manner.
J. Develops proficiency in the use of the web-based programs, Data and Information System Illinois (DAISI), i-Pathways, Reading Horizons, and others as directed to complete the responsibilities of the position. Instructs the students in computer literacy to effectively utilize the on-line instructional programs and successfully navigate the GED® exam.
K. Participates in mandatory faculty in-services, professional development activities, and division meetings as required.
L. Communicates regularly with the program personnel about supply requests, facility concerns, and needed support services. Documents student concerns per established policies, utilizing college forms.
M. All Adult Education Instructors are required to obtain 12 hours of approved professional development per fiscal year.
N. All Adult Education Instructors are required to take an on-line New Teacher Orientation within the first six months of hire. These hours are NOT included in the above mentioned 12 mandated hours.
Minimum Qualifications
Educational and Experiential Qualifications/Basis Job Requirements:
A. Bachelor's degree in education or related field required. Master's degree in Education, Linguistics, or related field preferred.
B. TESOL Certification preferred.
C. Knowledge of ICAPS programming preferred.
D. Three years of prior teaching experience, especially in Adult Education, High School Equivalency, ESL, or Contextualized Bridge Classes preferred.
E. Training, experience, and/or coursework in individual learning methodology in the basic academic skill areas of reading, writing, and mathematics preferred.
F. Demonstration of competency in subject area development preferred.
G. Experience with disadvantaged or underrepresented individuals preferred.
H. Experience with distance or remote learning preferred.
I. Must be computer literate.
J. Demonstration of English proficiency in oral and written English required.
Supplemental Information
NOTE: This is a face-to-face position and not available as remote teaching.
Instruction may be provided in a variety of instructional areas including:
Adult Basic Education (ABE) Instruction – Instructs students reading below the 9th grade level.
High School Equivalency (HSE) Instruction - Instructs students reading at or above the 9th grade level.
English Language Acquisition (ELA/ESL) Instruction – Instructs English as a Second Language students at various proficiency levels.
. This is a part-time position working up to 29 hrs. per week.
. Beginning rate of pay will be $39.25/hr.
