Basic Function/Definition

This is a continuous recruitment to fill part-time, temporary, hourly assignments on an as-needed basis. Departments or divisions will refer to the pool of applicants on file to fill temporary assignments as needed. You will be contacted by the hiring manager should the department or division be interested in scheduling an interview.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent foreign degree, plus two years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment.
OR
Associate degree, or equivalent foreign degree, plus six years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment
OR
A valid California Community College Credential authorizing service in the appropriate subject matter
OR
The equivalent.
AND
Demonstrate a sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Equivalencies

For Administration of Justice or Corrections: An Associate degree in the administration of justice, criminal justice, law enforcement, homeland security or related area AND/OR a combination of successfully completing coursework totaling at least twelve (12) units at the baccalaureate level in the area in which the equivalency is requested, plus evidence of at least three (3) years’ experience in a related career area.

For Police Science And /Or Corrections : A combination of successfully completed coursework totaling at least six (6) units at the lower division level in the area in which the equivalency is requested; specifically a certified law enforcement basic academy program, PLUS evidence of at least three (3) years’ experience in a related career area, OR at least six (6) units at the lower division level in the area in which the equivalency is requested; specifically a certified law enforcement basic academy program, PLUS a specific POST certification in the area in which equivalency is requested.

Pertains to training and educational programs certified for presentation by the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST).

Responsibilities

Assignment(s) may include teaching courses in any field related to the public safety career fields, as assigned during day, evening and weekend hours. Other duties and responsibilities include teaching responsibilities describe in Board Policies, California Education Code and Faculty Association Contract.

  • Provide academic instruction to students through lecture, lab, or performance courses; assess and develop cognitive abilities, communication skills, and higher order thinking skills among students through appropriate assignments and activities in one-on-one, classroom, and distance mediated instructional settings.
  • Advise and instruct students regarding programs of study, other institutions of higher education, lifelong learning resource, and effective study skills; refer students to support services, programs, resources, and other professionals as appropriate.
  • Observe and evaluate student performance in meeting course objectives and student learning outcomes through assignments, projects, discussions, and examinations; provide feedback in a timely manner to student inquiries in class, online, or during established consultation office hours.
  • Plan and organize instruction according to approved course outlines and student learning outcomes to maximize student learning in alignment with department, college, and District goals; implement the student performance objectives as listed on the official course outline of record.
  • Maintain current, accurate records of course enrollment, attendance, student academic progress, course curriculum, and student learning outcomes; prepare and submit data and reports related to course and student progress in a timely manner.
  • Evaluate and select instructional materials such as textbooks, manuals, software, and tools in collaboration, as appropriate, with discipline faculty; order instructional materials according to campus bookstore procedure to ensure timely deliver.
  • Revise and update course content and materials of instruction in accordance with new theory, application, and industry developments within the discipline or area of specialization.
  • Update syllabi; collaborate with discipline faculty on a regular basis to assess and revise measurable student performance indicators for each course.
  • May participate in curriculum and program development; may provide input into the development of student learning outcomes.
  • May attend and participate on committees and in department, division, campus, and District meetings.
  • May participate in articulation and matriculation related activities. Perform related duties as assigned.
  • May include working in a para-military atmosphere for professional vocational academies (i.e. marching, physical training, weapons range, heavy lifting, climbing ladders, fighting fires, hiking, etc.)

Foreign Degrees

Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.

Desired Qualifications

Teaching experience within a high school setting and/or similar age group.
