Position Overview

The Director, Software Test and Quality Engineering (STQE) plays a critical role in setting the vision and strategy for software quality, leading large teams, and working closely with multiple stakeholders to ensure that the company's software products meet the highest standards of reliability, security, and performance. This role will provide accountability, leadership, and oversight in driving the strategy, processes, and execution of the quality of our software. The Director, STQE will collaborate with several cross-functional teams to create and execute unified Software Quality strategy, standards, and processes that are leveraged across the software engineering teams.This position ensures the continued growth improvement of a successful STQE team which supports mission-critical development at Exact Sciences in a wide range of business areas.

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Define and Execute the Software Quality Engineering Strategy: Develop and implement a strategy for software testing, automation, performance testing, and continuous improvement of software quality.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with development, product management, DevOps, and other teams to ensure quality is built into the software development lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Define Testing Frameworks: Establish and refine testing frameworks, processes, and methodologies that improve the efficiency and effectiveness of testing (e.g., agile testing, continuous integration, and continuous testing).
  • Automation and Tools: Drive the adoption of automation tools and frameworks to improve testing coverage and reduce manual testing efforts.
  • Quality Metrics and KPIs: Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of the quality engineering efforts, such as defect rates, test coverage, release quality, and customer satisfaction.
  • Continuous Improvement: Apply broad industry knowledge and commercial awareness to contribute to the financial performance of the company. Stay current with emerging technologies and methodologies, identifying opportunities to integrate new tools and approaches to enhance the quality process.
  • Test Automation Strategy: Drive test automation strategies, balancing the need for automation with manual testing where appropriate.
  • DevOps Integration: Collaborate with DevOps teams to integrate automated quality checks, continuous testing, and performance monitoring into the CI/CD pipeline.
  • Risk Assessment: Identify and mitigate risks in the software development process by implementing early defect detection, root cause analysis, and other preventative measures.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that software products meet industry standards, legal, and regulatory compliance, especially in sectors such as healthcare, finance, or automotive.
  • Reporting: Provide clear, data-driven reports on software quality to senior leadership, highlighting risks, issues, and areas of improvement.
  • Customer Focus: Ensure that the quality of software released meets customer expectations in terms of performance, security, usability, and reliability.
  • Vendor Relationships: Oversee relationships with external vendors providing testing services, tools, or platforms, ensuring their performance aligns with company standards.
  • Raise capabilities in the engineering team; including, but not limited to, developing code, testing, deployment protocols, and best practices.
  • Effectively manage, support, mentor, and guide your team, including, but not limited to, delegating tasks and responsibilities, assessing employee performance and providing helpful feedback and training opportunities.
  • Consistent demonstration of exceptional leadership qualities, including, but not limited to, the ability to attract and retain the best team, foster a culture of high performance; lead with integrity, humility, accountability, and courage; and set a clear vision to energize teams towards the future.
  • Direct the resolution of highly complex or unusual problems applying advanced critical thinking.

  • Ability to lift up to 10 pounds for approximately 5% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for up to 90% of a typical working day.
  • Ability and means to travel between all Exact Sciences laboratory locations.
  • Ability to travel up to 15% of working time away from work location, may include overnight/weekend travel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, or a field related to the essential duties of the job; or High School Degree/General Education Diploma and 4 years of relevant experience in lieu of bachelor's degree.
  • 10+ years of experience in Information Technology with progressing level of responsibility and technical skillset.
  • 5+ years of experience leading or directing people and/or project teams.
  • Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of industry standards, as well as the changing business environment.
  • Experience in developing large-scale, high-volume services, distributed systems, and microservices-based architectures.
  • Proficient in core technologies such as Java, JavaScript frameworks like Angular or React, SQL and NoSQL databases, Terraform, messaging brokers like Kafka, and caching technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 8+ years of relevant technical and leadership experience.
  • Experience in any of the following areas: Next Generation Sequencing technologies, LIMS, Bioinformatics, or clinical data management.
  • Experience working in a regulated environment (SOX, HIPAA, CLIA, GCP, FDA, ISO-13485, and/or IEC-62304).
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Clinical Lab environment.
  • Proficiency in design, implementation, and maintenance of database systems (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, and NoSQL).
  • Enterprise class information technology experience (Custom-COTS Hybrid, Integrated Multi-Channel End-User, Multiple Mobile Platform Delivery,Distributed Big Data).

Salary Range:

$190,000.00 - $305,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - CA - San Diego on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to receive company stock upon hire as well as annually.
