Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, College Park, is seeking applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Dean for Strategic Relations, Office of Career Services. This leader will leverage their strategic business development experience,  corporate, federal and state government relationships and personal network to identify targets and establish new partnerships regionally, nationally, and globally with organizations interested in durable relationships with the Smith School to (a) access our talented business students for internships and jobs; (b) forge executive education opportunities; and expand experiential learning opportunities. This position offers an opportunity for a senior executive with an expansive executive network to forge new, mutually beneficial relationships with businesses and the Federal/State governments to enhance the impact of the Smith School.

Reporting directly to the Dean, the Assistant Dean will drive development of new corporate and federal/state government partnerships for the Robert H. Smith School of Business, particularly with organizations interested in hiring from our 3000 student undergraduate program and our 2000 student graduate programs including both MS and MBA. While the Assistant Dean is primarily an external-facing role, they will work closely with other external-facing leaders on Smith-wide partner collaboration, as well as their four direct reports within the Office of Career Services who will manage the approximately 20 staff members responsible for student career preparation and employer relations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Corporate partner and state/federal government relationship development and management. Quickly establish new, durable partnerships with corporations and organizations interested in acquiring Smith talent, as well as increasing the depth and breadth of engagement of existing strategic partners across the Smith School.

Cross-School direction, collaboration, and communication regarding corporate partnerships. Lead collaboration with other external-facing offices within the Smith School (e.g. Office of Experiential Learning, Office of Executive Education, Office of Graduate Admissions, and Development and Alumni Relationship) to formulate an overall, school-wide corporate partnership strategy for identifying new partners and coordinating cross-office engagement with existing strategic partners that both broadens and deepens partnerships aligned with Smith-wide strategic priorities and initiatives.

Leadership of the Office of Career Services: Working through four direct reports, set the direction for and ensure the strategic alignment of the career services operations to the strategic goals of the Smith School, including but not limited to:

  • Employer/recruiter outreach and relationship management
  • Student career preparation
  • Applications of technology to increase effectiveness of all talent
  • Management of fiscal and staff resources

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
MBA or Masters Degree in related field.

Experience:
  • Minimum of fifteen years as an executive leader within a corporation, research or educational institution
  • A broad professional network at the senior leader or executive level.
  • A successful track record of driving business development outcomes and developing corporate partnerships meeting or exceeding goals and objectives.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated success in collaborating across peers to set common goals, establish processes and metrics, and drive coordinated activity toward these metrics
  • The ability to clearly lead and articulate both short-term and long-term departmental and team member priorities in alignment with strategic priorities of the organization
  • Demonstrated success in managing projects and staff in dynamic, complex, and fast-paced environments within a competitive market
  • An interest in helping students achieve career outcomes while advancing the impact of an educational institution in the global business community
