The Department of Residence Life and Housing at SUNY Oswego is a leader in developing a premier residential environment where students are actively engaged in their learning experience. The Residence Life and Housing department at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications to fill a full-time Assistant Director for Residential Operations.

Compensation: minimum salary $55,000 (salary commensurate with experience) plus a full New York State benefits package.

Context of the position:

Reporting to an Associate Director for Residence Life and Housing, the Assistant Director (AD) is a full-time, twelve-month, live-off Residence Life and Housing (RLH) serving as an integral member of the department's leadership team. The Assistant Director is responsible for the day to day operations of the housing facilities. This includes coordinating maintenance and repairs, assisting with the planning and facilitation of the student move-in/move-out process, and ensuring compliance with University policies and regulation. This position will also have oversight of the residence halls in use when the University hosts camps, conferences, and external groups on campus.

Residence Life and Housing (RLH) leads the development of the strong residential character of the SUNY Oswego campus and provides a common experience for most of the undergraduate community. Situated within the Division of Student Affairs, RLH plays a critical role in furthering the mission and vision of the Division and in achieving institutional enrollment goals through cutting edge business services, direct interface with the holistic needs of students and their families, and nationally recognized residential education practices. RLH works to advance student attainment of General Education goals with residence hall initiatives organized through a curricular approach to residential education.

Description of Responsibilities:

Residence Hall Operations and Services:

  • Assist the Associate Director in managing the operations of the housing facilities, including residence halls and apartments.
  • Coordinate maintenance and repairs of the housing facilities, including the submission of maintenance requests and overseeing work order management as it relates to the student experience.
  • Participates in planning, directing, and coordinating operational or procedural matters to meet department goals and objectives.
  • Develop and lead training of Residence Life and Housing professional and student staff on department operational procedures.
  • Lead the opening and closing procedures for the residence halls which includes recruiting move-in crew volunteers, coordinating microfridge rentals, inspecting buildings, and representing the department on campus committee.
  • Maintain an inventory of all Residence Hall equipment and assets.
  • Work collaboratively with mail services staff to oversee the residence hall mail operation using the Quadient mail software.
  • Lead the recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation of 100 student operations services (SOS) staff who facilitate the front desk and recycling operations for residential communities.
  • Manage student payroll in SubitUp and SUNY Time and Attendance.
  • Serve as departmental contact for Millennium card access and coordinate with campus partners to establish residence hall access.
  • Maintain an inventory of keys, codes, and fobs for Residence Life and Housing and disseminate this information as needed to appropriate stakeholders.


Conferences and Summer Housing:

  • Provide direct oversight and leadership to the department's camps and conferences, work closely with campus partners to coordinate all aspects of the program, and serve as the primary contact for conference groups desiring on-campus housing arrangements.
  • Lead the recruitment, training, and evaluation process of summer undergraduate student staff.
  • Supervise summer conference staff to ensure a successful experience for conference attendees as well as summer school students.


Student Support and Crisis Management:

  • Serve in an on-call rotation with the other members of the leadership team that includes nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Follow up with students of concern in both crisis and non-crisis situations and refer appropriately.
  • Respond to inquiries and questions from students and parents in a supportive, timely, and effective manner.


Sustainability:
Oversee Residence Hall recycling program.

  • Liaison with the Office of Sustainability to develop new initiatives as well as implement pre-existing initiatives within the housing operation.
  • Promote and advertise on campus sustainability events within housing.
  • Partner with the Sustainability office to coordinate campus donation program(s).

Requirements:


Required Qualifications:

  • Masters degree at the time of application.
  • Minimum of two years full-time post-master's experience working in residence life and housing or a related field.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Higher Education, Business, or a related field.
  • Experience overseeing residence hall front desk and/or mail operations.
  • Experience working with camps and conferences in a residential setting.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Skills in organization, coordination and oversight of multiple priorities.
  • A commitment to student and staff success.
