Job Description
POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Architecture, to join Professor Mark Goulthorpe's ARPA-e funded research project, CarbonHouse. CarbonHouse looks to designing, theorizing, analyzing, and prototyping composite buildings to test the viability of emerging forms of carbon, especially those derived from gas pyrolysis of natural gas and other precursors. But graphene, carbon nano fibers, and carbon foams will also be considered (from other hydrocarbon sources), requiring the design, engineering, and manufacture of a series of test elements, resulting in design/build of an all-carbon exhibition house and design of larger multifamily housing. The project seeks to bring relevant expertise in one or more of the following: architectural design, CNC fabrication, novel material assembly, fiber reinforced polymeric composite engineering, etc.

REQUIRED: a Ph.D. in architecture, aeronautics and astronautics, mechanical engineering, or computer science; computational expertise and knowledge of CAD>CAM protocols (especially Rhino and C# or Python); and the ability to liaise successfully with an interdisciplinary team, helping to coordinate collaborative work, whether it be designs, reports, or manufacturing. Seek someone who ideally has some engineering or programming expertise, perhaps finite element modeling of composite structures or working knowledge of electrical properties of carbon-based materials. Programming skills, especially in C#, will be hugely beneficial, as basic software applications that focus on automation of analysis and manufacture will likely be developed. Agility with novel material prototyping should also be in evidence. PREFERRED: proficiency with finite element engineering software such as Ansys Mechanical Enterprise. Job #19597
