Director of Graduate Appointments

Job Description

DIRECTOR OF GRADUATE APPOINTMENTS, Office of Graduate Education (OGE), to provide leadership, guidance, and coordination related to implementation of the MIT Graduate Student Union-United Electrical Workers (GSU-UE) collective bargaining agreement (CBA) and the business process changes it brings to the graduate community. Will support the sizably-impacted campus community in the schools and college to prevent errors, misunderstandings, or violations of the CBA; supervise and coordinate School and College CBA Administrators to ensure that MIT is acting in accordance with contractual obligations and centering students in process and policy related to academic appointments; provide direct advice and case management support across campus; partner with the schools, college and others on coordinating central employment leaves of absence, hardship funding, child grants, etc.; and collaborate with other staff when student employee grievances and issues intersect with graduate student personal support or academic performance.

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree; a minimum of five years of academic administration experience; experience with employee/labor relations, including advising managers on supervising employees, in particular, union employees; ability to interpret employment policy and the collective bargaining agreement, triage employee concerns, and informally resolve conflict; excellent analytical, problem-solving, project planning and implementation, consulting, relationship-building, and written and verbal communication and presentation skills; knowledge/understanding of the organizational environment of higher education and large research universities and client priorities, issues, motivations, and constraints; and knowledge of the consulting process for effectively leading highly significant engagements from inception to conclusion; influence and facilitate sustained change and people at all levels; handle multiple constituencies, agendas, engagements, and tasks; and deal with ambiguity and conflict. Salary range: $90,000 - 115,000, based on experience.

A hybrid schedule, with both remote and on-campus work, is available. Occasional evening and weekend work will be required.
