About the Role:

This individual will oversee day-to-day Research & Development laboratory operations and compound management. Strong laboratory operational knowledge and previous leadership or management experience are highly valued. The Lab Manager will maintain compound management systems, including registering compounds from external sources into the database. The lab manager will also be responsible for developing and managing lab chemical inventory and facilities systems. This position is a unique opportunity to work with a multidisciplinary team in a dynamic company environment in the heart of San Diego's biotechnology community.

Your Contributions (include, but are not limited to):

These may include but are not limited to collaborate with chemists, biologists, and other lab staff to assist them with the following:

  • Receive and process compounds from external sources (CRO), including database registration, labeling, delivery/storage to the designated locations, and submission of compounds for internal testing

  • Prepare stock solutions and organize the compound library, if assigned

  • Prepare compounds and manage shipment for external studies, including weighing, labeling, packaging samples, updating the database, and documenting study requests

  • Receive and process all data from external study vendors, including uploading it to the database

  • Manage chemical inventory, including ordering, entering data into the database, checking in/out chemicals, and dispensing them

  • Manage all laboratory instruments, including calibration and maintenance, service contracts, space allocation, and stock up supplies such as microwave tubes, ISCO columns, LC/MS filters, etc.)

  • Maintain laboratory inventory, supply list, and supply stocking, or work vendor to

  • Manage all laboratory purchasing, shipping, and receiving

  • Coordinate with IT to manage lab-related hardware, software, and server/system requirements

  • Understand and ensure staff follows industry standards for laboratory compliance and safety

  • Support the organization in maintaining a work environment that fosters learning, open communication, collaboration, and teamwork

Safety and Compliance

  • Adhere to safety procedures to ensure a clean and safe working environment specific to R&D labs

  • Ensure all the Lab personnel use appropriate protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, lab coats, safety goggles and safety shoes

  • Collaborate with EHS to identify the safety category of NCE molecules and appropriate PPE before introducing them to labs

  • Handle hazardous/potent materials with care, following proper storage, handling, and disposal procedures

  • Keep laboratory organized and clutter-free at all times

  • Collaborate with EHS/operations for lab waste disposal such as sharp items, broken glass, solvents, and potent compounds

  • Prepare lab for health authority audits

Training and Lab procedures

  • Facilitates lab tours with new hires and visitors as required

  • Provide training to new hire or junior scientist to perform essential lab functions including gowning/de-gowning procedure, waste handling, equipment operation

  • Develop quick start guide for all the lab equipment

Equipment onboarding, maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting

  • Support the labs moves, when assigned, (e.g., to the new headquarters site) including packing, coordinating, unpacking and installation of equipment

  • Coordinates with the vendors and facility for annual equipment calibration, preventive maintenance, and repair/troubleshooting

  • Maintain the equipment PM/calibration reports, calibration due date and usage logbooks

  • Organizes equipment and instrument spare parts/change parts and tools

  • Moves laboratory equipment and auxiliary components as needed to designated storage space

  • Collaborates with facility, and vendor to identify utilities requirements such as power outlet, water connection, compressed air, nitrogen to onboard new equipment

Inventory Management

  • Track and maintain raw material, API, solvents, and auxiliary material inventory at all times

  • Update the inventory quarterly and discard expired material and/or replace it with new materials

  • Be the contact person to order new and/or replace the excipient samples, auxiliary lab supply and small lab equipment

  • Collaborate with IT to use software program to manage the inventory such as Benching

Requirements:
  • BS/BA degree and Some relevant experience. Pharmaceutical industry experience

  • Associates degree and 3 years of relevant experience. Pharmaceutical industry experience

  • High School diploma and 10 plus years of relevant experience. Pharmaceutical industry experience

  • Demonstrates solid level of understanding R&D priorities and RDSO goals

  • Ability to work as part of a team; may train lower levels

  • Strong communications, problem-solving, analytical thinking skills

  • Detail oriented yet can see broader

  • Ability to meet multiple deadlines, with a high degree of ownership and responsibility

  • Strong project management skills

  • Awareness and understanding of cGLPs and cGMPs relating to pharmaceuticals

  • Must be self-motivated, independent and proactive

  • Ability to learn quickly and think independently
