Job Description

The Assistant Director of the Poverty Initiative is a key member of the Initiative’s executive team. This position will support the team through a combination of project management, writing and editing, research and high level administrative and relationship support functions. The Assistant Director works closely with the team on overseeing the implementation of college-wide and cross-college strategic initiatives for the Poverty Initiative and managing key partnership conversations with various units on campus. This position coordinates special projects, compiles information and provides complete complex reports and analyses.

A successful candidate will be an excellent writer, a high level of professionalism, creative problem solving, strong judgment, tact and diplomacy. We are looking for a social-minded team player with background skills and knowledge in project management, evaluation and reporting, and budgeting. Who We Are: The Notre Dame Poverty Initiative is charged with establishing Notre Dame as a premier university in poverty-related research, student formation, and policy and program impact. Every day, poverty stifles hope, opportunity, and dignity for 700 million people worldwide, including 37 million Americans. And despite well intentioned policies and programs, too little is known about how to break poverty’s vicious generational cycle. The University of Notre Dame’s Poverty Initiative is an unprecedented University-wide effort to develop and advance innovative solutions to help vulnerable populations and to train a new generation of leaders committed to the fight against poverty. It will establish the University as a leading institution for poverty research, illuminating proven pathways out of poverty for people around the world. We are searching for someone who shares the same passion and mission to join our dynamic team as the Assistant Director.

Who We Need:
We are looking for someone who wants to change the face of poverty in our country and believes that impacting poverty is possible. The Assistant Director of the Poverty Initiative will be responsible for:

  • Comprehensive Project Management: Project manage high stake investments and opportunities that are not placed within a unit of the university or until they are placed within a unit of the university. This includes creating, maintaining, and adhering to project timelines and relationship management with stakeholders. Led with flexibility as projects managed will change year over year. Projects include items such as: Opioid research initiative, Internal poverty research package RFP process, and support to the Director with curation of dream team candidates
  • Stakeholder Management: This role will be responsible for working both internal and external stakeholders for Notre Dame.
  • Development and Oversight of Programs: Oversee the Poverty Initiative’s investment process and procedures to support decision making by the Director and Managing Director. Prepare reports on impact of investments under consideration. Own the investment execution process once the Poverty Initiative leadership has determined an investment is to be made to a university unit. Track, document, and facilitate the MOU process with units across campus.
  • Reporting: Own the reporting process for the Poverty Initiative including an annual report process from units receiving investments. Consolidate reports annually for the Provost’s office and key benefactors. Execute other periodic reporting to other stakeholders as needed.

This is a five-year, limited-term position. Contingent on funding, the position may be extended.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree with 5-7 years of related work experience.

Skills:
  • A deep commitment to the mission of the University is necessary.
  • Proficient in Microsoft suite and Google applications.
  • Detail-oriented, logical, and highly organized.
  • Analytical problem-solving skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy and consistency.
  • Ability to take initiative, work autonomously, and take on additional responsibilities as required by business needs, facilitating a prompt response to requests.
  • Experience preparing financial reports, including operating budgets, proposal budgets, and internal and external financial reports.
  • Ability to learn Notre Dame’s general ledger system and other internal reporting systems.
  • An ability to thrive in a small and dynamic team while effectively navigating a large University environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate has 5-7 years of related work experience and a Bachelor’s degree in business, social sciences, or related field.
