Instructor, Drone
Job Description
Occupational Summary
The Drone Instructor is responsible for instructing drone courses for both the civilian and public safety sectors. The instructor will prepare students for small unmanned aircraft systems flight certification by covering the following topics: flight theory and flight operations for both day and nighttime utilizing the NC Department of Transportation Division of Aviation approved curriculum.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide excellent customer service and assistance to internal and external customers
- Responsible for delivering instruction that will prepare the student to sit for the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Knowledge Test and NCDOT UAS Operator Permit
- Stays up-to-date on the curriculum to comply with the latest FAA and NCDOT Division of Aviation UAS flight standards
- Maintains accurate student attendance roster and student records
- Maintains flight log data and maintenance records of all unmanned aircraft
- Determines need for supplies; ensure proper storage and security of supplies
- Maintains classroom and equipment in a neat and orderly manner
- Performs equipment testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance
- Analyze weather forecasts to ensure safe flights
- Plan drone flight routes
- Navigate drones along designated paths
- Monitor drones during flight
- Presents instruction in a professional, timely, and accurate manner consistent with FAA and NCDOT policies and procedures
- Instructs and monitors student actions in all phases of training and ensures student compliance with program policy
- Evaluates students daily making formal evaluations on a regular schedule by utilizing appropriate academic and skills tests
- Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned in support of the College’s mission, core values, and goals
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Hold an FAA Part 107 Remove Pilot Certificate
- Excellent electronic and mechanical skills
- Experience utilizing drones for first responder operations/missions
- Progressive industry experience in Unmanned Aerial Systems
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Commitment to community college philosophy and student success
- Knowledge of flight controls, aerodynamics, the National Airspace System, aviation weather, aviation safety, ethical airmanship, FAA registration, and community-based safety guidelines
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge:
- Adult learning theory, concepts and teaching methodology
- Curriculum design and development
- Knowledge of college programs, services and procedures relating to workforce development programs
- Current trends, research, and development in the area of assignment
- Working knowledge of records management and control
- Federal, state and college requirements regarding FERPA and other applicable laws and regulations
- Working knowledge of UAV related computer applications and the ability to quickly learn new computer software
- Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations, as appropriate
- Demonstrates a level of expertise on subject matter that coincides with drone course instruction in both civilian and First Responder sectors
- Proficiency in planning, organization, communication, training, and interpersonal skills
- Proficiency in technological systems as they apply to instruction and administrative needs, including Microsoft Office
- Competency in monitoring/assessing the performance of self, other individuals and programs to make improvements or take corrective action
- Attention to detail and high level of accuracy
- Works effectively in a team environment with a customer service focus
- Ability to multi-task, organize, prioritize and follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion with an attention to detail
- Maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
