About the Department

The Physics Department provides: (1) High quality Physics instruction to the University community through courses in introductory physics; (2) educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in physics through high quality curricula, faculty, and research facilities; (3) outreach programs that advance scientific knowledge. Our research programs cover a diverse spectrum including astrophysics, general relativity, condensed matter theory and experiment, computational physics, biophysics, nanoscale science, physics education, experimental nuclear physics, particle and nuclear theory, experimental optics, and experimental atomic and molecular physics. The department enrolls approximately 120 graduate students and 140 undergrad physics majors. The department size is approximately 56 faculty members. The department is staffed by 6 SHRA employees and has about 50 Faculty members. The Department has approximately 120 graduate students and 160 undergraduate physics majors.

Essential Job Duties

We invite applications for two distinct Teaching Professor positions within our Physics Department. Both positions involve course coordination, teaching, and mentoring, but each focuses on different levels of physics education. Candidates will be hired at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or full Teaching Professor based on their education and experience.

Position 1: Life-Sciences-Level Physics Course Coordinator

The successful candidate will:
  • Coordinate algebra-based physics courses for approximately 900 students per semester.
  • Oversee the deployment of homework and exams.
  • Teach life-sciences-level physics courses.
  • Develop and manage content for problem sessions.
  • Mentor, recruit, and engage in other roles shaped by their individual strengths and interests.

Position 2: Engineering-Level Physics Course Coordinator (Potential Start of Summer 2025)

The successful candidate will:
  • Assist in coordinating engineering-level physics courses for approximately 3,000 students per semester.
  • Oversee the deployment of homework and exams.
  • Teach engineering-level physics courses.
  • Develop and manage content for problem sessions.
  • Mentor, recruit, and engage in other roles shaped by their individual strengths and interests.

Minimum Education and Experience

Requires doctor’s degree, an equivalent degree, or equivalent professional experience.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Extensive experience teaching physics at the undergraduate level.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using WebAssign, Moodle, and similar platforms for course deployment.
  • The department uses OpenStax “College Physics” and Chabay and Sherwood’s “Matter and Interactions” textbooks, so familiarity with these textbooks is a plus.
