Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Sports & Recreation Manager, coaches will work with youth of various ages. Coaches must have the ability and desire to work with children, parents, volunteers, and peers. Coaches will supervise and assist in activities for all Sports & Recreation sessions. Coaches ensure the safety and well-being of players while they are in their care.
Essential Functions
*To know, explain and exemplify the mission, purpose, and values of the Kroc Center and The SalvationArmy (TSA).
*Provide building blocks for healthy development for youth through the infusing of the 40Developmental Assets into programming and daily interactions.
*Assist in the leading of all sports and recreation activities with enthusiasm - according to training protocol established.
*Adhere to and implement discipline procedures created for players.
*Keep player issues confidential. Do not share issues with other players, parents, news organizations, volunteers, or staff members who are not involved.
*Adhere to dress code at all times.
*Return program equipment to appropriate designated area upon completion of activity with group unless otherwise arranged.
*Facilitate player check in and out procedures according to protocol.
*Communicate respectfully with peers, supervisors, and customers of various socio-economic backgrounds. Handle disputes with participants and parents in a professional manner with guidance from the and Sports & Recreation Director.
*Ensure the safe use of the facility and execution of activities through enforcement of facility and activity-specific regulations and insuring that only registered players participate.
*Maintain a safe working environment; report any and all facility defects/problems and any suspicious activities or persons to the Sports & Recreation Director.
*Assist in emergencies or treatment of injured participants. Follow up with completion of appropriate paperwork as directed.
*Perform regular head counts and keep an accurate attendance list of assigned players. Plan activities, lesson plans, and supervision of activity stations with the help of other coaches as needed.
*Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
*Recognize the spiritual need of individuals, which may require referral to the officer/pastor who is an ordained minister of religion.
*Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis
*Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead
*Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds
*Perform all other duties as assigned
Working Conditions
Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to be able to lift up to 10lbs. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinets drawers and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer, fax and telephone.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English. Bilingual English/Spanish is preferred.
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Must have ability to work and relate well with people.
- Must attend staff, child safety, and other trainings as directed.
- Must have a philosophy of education, child, and player development which is consistent with that of The Salvation Army Kroc Center.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- Must have the ability to work with children, parents, and staff in a capacity of leadership, counseling, and education including but not limited to:
- Ability to relate joyfully and sensitively to children of all ages. Ability to use appropriate positive discipline consistently. Ability to handle security and crisis situations calmly. Ability to provide constant and continual supervision.
