Summary of Position

The Military & Veteran Services department supports veterans, active service members, reservists, and eligible dependents attending Red Rocks Community College. The Director provides department leadership and supervision, develops and delivers programming and resources to increase veteran student retention, collaborates with colleagues across the College to develop, support, and promote opportunities for student engagement, and oversees and evaluates benefits processing to improve services for students. This position builds relationships with external veteran service organizations, creates and maintains promotional materials for veteran students, including a comprehensive website, builds partnerships throughout the service area, and seeks funding to support programming.

Work is performed primarily at the Lakewood campus, with hours at the Arvada campus, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with occasional night and weekend hours. May require travel between campuses. Attendance at off campus events and some travel may be required.


Essential Responsibilities

 

A successful candidate possesses experience working with military and veteran populations, and is at ease with the following:

  • Collecting and Analyzing Data: Collects and reviews data to evaluate program effectiveness on an ongoing basis.
  • Planning and Prioritization: Organizes work, sets priorities, and determines resource requirements. Coordinates with others in response to multiple, competing demands to ensure work is completed in a timely manner. Readily readjusts priorities to respond to pressing and changing demands.
  • Relationship Building: Fosters and sustains robust connections, internally and externally, to effectively collaborate in providing support for all individuals.

 

Qualifications

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Must obtain a VA School Certifying Official status within one month of employment and maintain that status throughout employment.
  • Three years’ experience working with military-affiliated populations, within a post-secondary institution, or government regulated program(s).
  • Two years’ supervisory experience.
  • One year experience certifying and administering VA education benefits.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and a commitment to inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in counseling, student development public administration or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Military experience.
  • Experience working with the Department of Defense and/or Colorado National Guard Tuition Assistance programs.
  • Experience with data evaluation and analysis.
  • Knowledge of and experience in budget development and management.
  • Working knowledge of VA compliance and the requirements set forth in the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2017.
  • Moderate Excel skills including VLOOKUP formulas and pivot tables.

Physical & Cognitive Demands

The following are some of the physical and cognitive demands commonly associated with this position.

  • Occasionally moves, positions, and transports files and office materials weighing up to 10 lbs.
  • This is largely a sedentary role. This position operates in an office environment and constantly uses a computer, and routinely uses standard office equipment including phones, copiers, etc.
  • The person in this position constantly communicates with internal and external constituents and students. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Cognitive demands include comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, synthesizing, negotiating, communicating, instructing, and interpersonal skills.
