Essential Job Duties

The Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to perform a primary role in microbial genome assemblies and comparative genomic studies from plant pathogen samples isolated in North Carolina field trials. The Postdoc will be responsible, but not limited to the following duties:
  • Isolate and maintain biological samples
  • Extract DNA and perform PCR
  • Projects will include, disease identification, pathogen isolation, strain characterization, and disease rating of tobacco variety trails in greenhouse and field settings, as well as correlating this data with oomycete genotypic diversity.
  • Leading and conducting research
  • Develop and disseminate research and extension material as it pertains to the management of diseases of tobacco.
  • Training undergraduate and graduate researchers in the laboratory of Dr. Ahumada
  • Recording and analyzing data
  • Preparing scientific manuscripts
  • Communicating research findings at local and national scientific conferences and grower meetings.
  • Drive departmental trucks to research fields and greenhouse trials.
  • Work with graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Overview of the Organizational Unit:
As part of the Land Grant University, the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University is composed of over 40 faculty that direct a diverse portfolio of programs in teaching, research, and extension. Collectively, these strengths not only serve our clientele and our science but also provide a rich environment for graduate education and training that can be tailored to the specific career interests of the student, irrespective of whether they prefer training in the basic sciences or are preparing for a career in extension. Our education and research programs provide graduate and undergraduate students with unique hands-on learning opportunities using the latest technologies. Entomology and Plant Pathology houses the Plant Disease and Insect Clinic, the Larry Grand Mycological Herbarium, Micropropagation and Repository Unit, Structural Pest Management Training Facility, an Insect Museum with 1.9 million vouchered insects, and the Center for Integrated Fungal Research.

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences houses 12 Academic departments with 294 faculty, 2,891 undergraduate students and 899 graduate students. The College is home to 18 research stations strategically located across the state that enhances our interactions with our farmers, stakeholders, and industry partners. Monday- Friday, 8am-5pm

Department Required Skills

  • PhD in Plant Pathology, Microbiology or a related field of study that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Proficiency is required with computer software and hardware, statistical analyses in SAS, R, JMP or other statistical software.
  • Mastery of molecular techniques is essential and field experience.
  • The successful candidate must possess excellent computer coding, organizational, interpersonal, and communication (both oral and written) skills.
  • Competitive candidates must have significant field, greenhouse and microbiological experience as it relates to phytopathogenic microbes.
  • Phytobacteriology and applied plant pathology experience will be viewed positively.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Experience and mastery of molecular techniques including: primer design, PCR, electrophoresis, qPCR, cloning and mutagenesis is highly desired.
  • Experience in experimental record keeping, molecular analyses, pesticide applications, maintaining safety in the laboratory, presenting results in written reports and oral presentations, and other duties.

Required License or Certification

Valid Driver’s License and the ability to obtain a NC Driver’s License within 60 days of hire. A valid license must be maintained throughout employment.

The Postdoc will be required to drive a department truck.
