Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

This position is responsible for managing all aspects of dietary services and nutrition programs at the University Health Center. This position provides comprehensive nutrition services and programs to the general student body as well as faculty and staff of the UMD College Park campus. Services include individual Medical Nutrition Therapy including assessment for medical disorders including diabetes, hypertension, lipid disorders, and other dietary related disorders. All nutrition counseling and education is based on evidence based practices and therapeutic principles and is framed in a non-diet/health-at-every-size model. This position serves as a nutrition expert for the campus community.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Master’s degree in dietetics from an accredited program by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. 
  • Credentials: Registered Dietitian Nutritionist AND Licensed Dietitian-Nutritionist in Maryland is required.

Experience:
  • 3 – 5 years of experience offering medical nutrition therapy, education, and programming.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Advanced Knowledge of scientific principles of nutrition.
  • Advanced Knowledge of evidence-based nutrition interventions.
  • Advanced Knowledge of current nutrition issues on college campuses.
  • Advanced Knowledge of theories and methods of health education and prevention.
  • Advanced Knowledge of social marketing theories and health communication strategies.
  • Advanced skills in health behavior change.
  • Ability to critically review health-related professional literature and apply findings for improved outcomes.
  • Ability to use components of motivational interviewing.
  • Advanced skills in nutrition assessment and intervention.

  • Experience developing, implementing and coordinating nutrition education programs

  • Experience working in higher education settings
  • Presentation and training skills are desirable.

Additional Certifications:

Registered Dietitian Nutritionist AND Licensed Dietitian-Nutritionist in Maryland are required.

Additional Information:

Essential Duty/Responsibility (1): | Clinical Nutrition Services: Meet with individual clients to provide clinical nutrition counseling and education. Complete timely patient medical charting in the electronic medical records system and consult with medical and behavioral health teams within UHC and outside practitioners on patient care. Provide referrals to campus and community resources.
Percentage (1): | 40%

Essential Duty/Responsibility (2): | Nutrition Education Programs: Develop, implement, and evaluate nutrition education programs and educational materials for the campus community. Collaborate with key stakeholders to develop a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to nutrition health promotion. Responsible for researching and creating/maintaining up-to-date, evidence-based educational programs and materials.
Percentage (2): | 10%

Essential Duty/Responsibility (3): | Peer Nutrition Coaching Program Coordination: Oversee the Peer Nutrition Coaching Program- recruit, train, and supervise dietetics students to provide peer nutrition coaching services and other educational outreach programs. Plan, organize, and facilitate peer nutrition coaching training, including a 40-hour training week, weekly group meetings, and 1:1 coach-the-coach sessions.

Essential Duty/Responsibility (4): | Administrative duties: Scheduling clinical clients, serving on UHC and campus committees, Bi-annual Peer Chart Review, Quality Improvement reporting, Manage ordering/stocking program materials within the unit budget, collect program/service data, and marketing services/programs to the campus community. Compose writing letters of recommendation for post-graduate residency, graduate school, and professional jobs
Percentage (4): | 5%

Essential Duty/Responsibility (5): | Continuing education: Stay abreast of current, evidence-based information and best practices in the Dietetics field by attending annual conferences, reading professional journals, and through professional supervision. Maintaining both national and state credentials. Other assigned duties.

Physical Demands

Hours may vary depending on program responsibilities. Some events require bending, lifting and the transport of displays, audiovisual equipment and program materials. Exposure to communicable diseases by virtue of work in a health care facility is possible. This position is considered essesntial for medically related emergencies
