The Bezos Center for Sustainable Protein at North Carolina State University is supported by a $30 million grant award from the Bezos Earth Fund. The Center comprises a dynamic, collaborative team of researchers, educators, practitioners, trainees, and staff led by Professor Rohan Sirwaiker, Co-Director & Chief Scientific Officer, and William Aimutis, Co-Director & Chief Operating Officer. Together with academic and industry partners, the Center will advance research, workforce development, and outreach related to the biomanufacturing of diverse types of sustainable proteins while serving as a global knowledge and networking hub.
Essential Job Duties
The primary purpose of the Bezos Center Financial Manager is to administer and manage a variety of complex, research-intensive ranges of financial, research administration and compliance, operational, and administrative activities of the Center. This position is the main point of contact for all financial transactions and is responsible for a variety of financial and business related duties within the areas of accounting, budgeting, auditing, reporting, and grants administration. This position will also oversee the financial and compliance activities related to Center membership and industry relations. The financial resources are primarily sponsored research, with the additional possibility of some F&A, state appropriated, receipt generated, and foundation accounts. This position will work in collaboration with the College of Engineering Business Office, the Office of Research and Innovation (ORI), other university level offices, and college faculty and leadership across NC State and external partners.
Responsibilities of this position will include but are not limited to:
- Directing and administering the financial and administrative elements of the Center. The complex nature of our funding sources requires the person to monitor the financial resources of the Center on a consistent basis. This position will be responsible for reconciling all funding projects as well as produce a financial summary and forecasting report for the Co-directors and leadership.
- Oversee and manage the budgeting, subcontracting, accounting, and reporting to ensure compliance (Federal Uniform Guidance) with institutional and research sponsor rules and regulations
- Responsible for all pre- and post-award management to include entering PINS records, providing budget support to PIs in pre-award stage, managing close-outs, PMR’s (project modification requests), Chartfield Requests, performing cost share setups and effort reporting when applicable
- Evaluates and interprets university policies to assure the Center policies and procedures are in compliance with federal regulations and do not jeopardize the university’s participation in Federal programs
- Monitors the financial budget and spending of all sub-awards and sub accounts off the prime account, which will require intentional collaboration and communication with financial points of contacts at partner institutions, members and collaborating departments as well as PIs
- Processes journal vouchers, financial reporting preparations, revenue, expense and payroll auditing, ad hoc reporting and other duties as assigned
- Acts as liaison to many University Offices including but not limited to Contracts and Grants (C&G), the Office of Sponsored Programs and Regulatory Compliance Services (SPARCS), the Office of Research Commercialization, etc.
- Contributes to the preparation of the Annual Report for the Center and its members, and solely responsible for collection and presentation of all financial data
- Compiles any requested financial information with the approval of the Co-Directors and/or Authorized Organizational Representative(s), communicates that information to appropriate parties (internal and external)
- Oversees budget analysis, payment of invoices and rebudgets/PMRs for the Center’s research efforts (supporting the programs, development needs, projects and other strategically identified productivity needs)
- Forecasting throughout each Project Year to ensure a predictable and manageable Project-year-end close on ledger 5 account(s)
- Forecasting throughout each Fiscal Year to ensure a predictable and manageable fiscal-year-close on ledger 2 account(s)
- Lead quarterly reviews of the Center’s financials with the College of Engineering financial team and the Center’s Leadership (as needed)
- Provides a financial summary and forecast to the Center Leadership on a monthly basis, interprets the data, and makes clear recommendations to ensure proper financial management.
- Oversees the preparation of financial tables for the Annual Report for the Center

- Help with travel reservations for Center’s leadership team
- Getting quotes and ordering supplies and equipment required by the Center. Navigating orders through Marketplace and the sole-sourcing process.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Graduation from a four-year college or university including 12 hours of accounting. Graduation from a two-year college with a degree in accounting; or graduation from a two year college with an associate degree in accounting; or graduation from a two year college with a degree in business or closely-related area with 12 hrs of accounting; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
Other Required Qualifications
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to convey and communicate in a professional manner to a broad audience including executives, academic administrators, faculty, staff, and external parties
- Ability to manage and complete multiple tasks or projects to meet critical deadlines and manage workflow in a timely manner
- Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail
- High level of knowledge and experience with Microsoft Excel and Word, or similar software
- Previous experience in a role with financial management responsibilities
- Ability to independently respond to and resolve questions, concerns and problems. Must be able to address business needs of the Center based on requests from Center Leadership without direct accounting supervision
- Must be able to design and deliver effective, accurate and user-friendly reports in a time-efficient manner
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience processing small purchase vouchers, journals, market place orders and purchase requisitions
- Knowledge of NCSU funding sources including spending guidelines
- Experience with P-card reconciliation and monthly account statements
- Experience with processing travel reimbursements and deposits
- Knowledge of UG – Uniform Guidance and CAS – Cost Accounting Standards
- Experience in a role related to management of Center-level business operations in an academic organization
- Experience in a role related to management of sponsored research contracts in an academic organization
