The Grounds and Fleet Services unit provides campus wide programs and services and support to include landscape construction and maintenance, comprehensive waste and recycling programs and services and management of the University’s auto shop and motor fleet. Revenue supported programs and services are provided to Transportation, Housing, Dining, Athletics, Campus Recreation and individual colleges and departments.
Essential Job Duties
The Horticultural Application Technician will oversee the demands for organics, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides spraying for trees, shrub, grass and pastures on NC State Campus.
Position must have a thorough knowledge and skill in the safe application of various chemicals and nutrient supplements and the use of equipment to perform the tasks.
Must be knowledgeable and able to identify grass or plant diseases to determine the appropriate course of treatment. Must be knowledgeable in knowing cover areas to specified depths with pesticides, applying knowledge of weather conditions, droplet sizes, elevation-to-distance ratios, and obstructions.
Position will operate grounds maintenance equipment (tractors, skid steers, aerators, mowers, and other machines used in landscape management. Will be skilled in the ability to operate and calibrate all types of tank sprayer systems and spreaders. Clean or service machinery to ensure operating efficiency, using water, gasoline, lubricants, or hand tools. Provide driving instructions to drivers to ensure complete coverage of designated areas where chemicals will be applied. Will provide input to Supervisor for training employees in the proper way to apply pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides, fertilizers, and soil amenities.
This position is also required to apply sound horticultural practices and integrated pest management procedures on all university property and serve as an area plant care expert. Work with the supervisor and provide input to make sure all service agreements with plant maintenance responsibilities are met according to the contract with campus customers, i.e., fertilization, maintenance, pruning and soil testing.
Position does field evaluation for plant conditions and makes recommendations to supervisor for improvement; monitors and identifies diseased plants as well as analyze results of testing and corrects the problem. Support Supervisor in providing input for liaison role in Grounds Management with the campus community for solutions to any unknown plant problems. Position prepares detailed monthly reports to management on grounds activities and makes recommendations for plant needs. Acts as a training resource, based on knowledge and experience in different aspects of plant care for Grounds maintenance staff.

Minimum Experience/Education
Necessary Special Qualifications: North Carolina Pesticide License may be required and can be obtained within six months of employment; North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License may be required.
Other Required Qualifications
Position serves in a critical role and employee must work during adverse weather conditions and may be required to work even if the University is closed to normal operations.
Experience in grounds maintenance and/or turf. Prefer experience in arboriculture.
Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 60 pounds occasionally.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in grounds maintenance and/or arboriculture.
Knowledge of plant and animal organisms and ability to formulate proper methods to prepare and administer pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides spraying for trees, shrub, grass, andpastures on NC State Campus.
Experience using computers.
Required License or Certification
North Carolina driver’s license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
North Carolina pesticide license preferred and must be obtained within 6 months of hire and must be maintained throughout employment.
