Compensation: $100,000-$120,000
Reports to: Executive Director
Position Description
The Director of People and Culture (DPC) will be responsible for leading all aspects of Human Resources including recruiting/retention, benefits, hiring/onboarding, performance management, payroll and general compliance, learning and development, contract coordination, emergency resilience planning, teambuilding and wellness, values/norms alignment, and all other HR strategy and operations leadership.
The DPC will be an organization leader for building a culture of safety within the organization through equitable hiring, onboarding, and learning & development practices as well as managing compliance and training. The DPC will also guide new employees through the benefits and compensation process while complying with all local, state, and federal regulations for HR. The ideal candidate will be organized, experienced, and dedicated to strengthening the workforce of TLCBD to best serve the Tenderloin in a sustainable manner. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in nonprofit leadership and people management, compliance, finance and administration, with experience and expertise in leading diverse teams while centering equity and inclusion.
Reporting to the Executive Director, you will be part of a dynamic team supporting programs for the social good of the Tenderloin community. This candidate will play a critical role in partnering with the team across Policy & Advocacy, Operations, and Development in strategic decision-making and operations as TLCBD continues to enhance its quality programming and build capacity. ability to communicate effectively and lead financial decision-making that has real on-the-ground impacts.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
- Lead in ensuring diversity, equity and inclusion, anti-racism, employee wellbeing, promoting a culture of health, safety, positive communication and equity.
- Recruits and assists in the interview process of potential applicants on experience, skills, and education.
- Contacts applicants’ references and performs background checks required by the organization.
- Organizes and manages new employee orientations and training programs, the sending of offer/decline letters, collects onboarding paperwork (w-4s, health insurance packet, fingerprinting, etc.) and leads onboarding/offboarding of new/terminated staff.
- Updates job requirements/descriptions when needed and manages annual performance evaluation processes, PIPs and promotions.
- Explains and provides information on employee benefits, programs, and education (managing 410k, health benefits and employee questions, flex spending, etc.).
- Advises on benefit needs/evaluates benefit contract bids, including worker’s compensation, unemployment, etc.
- Advances values and norms within the organization, ensuring staff members understand and embody what TLCBD’s strives to be.
- Coordinates and manages the payroll process, including input and management of payroll system and vendor service (including any garnishments or overtime), also oversees PTO tracking & reconciliation, monitoring scheduling/overtime, processing/management of timesheets, etc.
- Ensures HR department policies and processes are consistent and streamlined. Responsible for updating the Employee Handbook and creating emergency response/disaster resiliency procedures
- Commitment to learning & professional development programs that maximize individual professional growth and organization goals including best practices in human resources activities and CA employment and HR laws and regulations.
- Lead organizer of team building, organizational culture, and fun events & gatherings on a regular basis
- Work closely and transparently with all external partners including third-party vendors and consultants.
- Covers all legal compliance for human resource federal and state requirements.
- Maintains employee records and paperwork.
- Represents TLCBD in the community and at recruiting events.
- Answers employee questions and addresses employee concerns with the organization including employee safety, welfare, wellness and health
Required Skill & Experience:
- HR applicants require a bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, or a related field, and/or 5+ years of experience in a people management position.
- Possesses superb written and spoken communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal relationship building and employee coaching skills.
- Excellent computer skills, Excel, and demonstrated skills in database management and record-keeping.
- Organized and efficient in daily tasks.
- Specialized training in employee relations, coaching/counseling/mentoring, and/or DEI preferred.
- General knowledge of employment best practices.
- Technologically proficient with experience in organizing employee files, reports, and performance plans.
- Knowledge of basic accounting, such as budget and HR/Payroll systems and senior leadership in the roll-out of more robust DEI policies and practices.
