Adjunct Faculty (GRAD), Practicum Supervisors (Early Childhood and/or Elementary)

Job Description

The McKeown School of Education at Salem State University is seeking adjunct professors to supervise pre-practicum and/or practicum teaching candidates remotely. Supervisors are required to meet with students for a pre-observation to discuss their lesson plans, watch videos of the candidate teaching, and provide oral and written feedback to the candidate in post-observation meetings. Supervisors also work with host teachers to support the student-teacher as they develop knowledge and skills across the time in the field, and hold regular, required meetings with the host teacher after each observation. Because most of this work is conducted remotely, the supervisor must use McKeown School’s technology platforms, such as Sibme and Canvas. Training is provided on all technology platforms, observation tools, and forms for licensure documentation. As this work is done remotely, supervisors can hold a full-time teaching job. Bi/multilingual supervisor candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Compensation is based on the number of pre-practicum and/or practicum students supervised in a semester, ideally between 3 and 6 in number.

  • Supervise remotely using the required platform(s)
  • As the University’s representative, lead the supervision process by maintaining regular communication with the field office, host teacher, and student teacher.
  • Check Salem State email daily and respond within 24 hours, Monday-Friday.
  • Attend all scheduled orientation and training sessions.
  • Set up, publish and maintain the University-approved platform for the assigned supervision section.
  • Communicate thorough, actionable feedback in writing via CAP online and orally in remote meetings with teacher candidates.
  • Assign grades and any other required assessment information using required platforms and input final grade by the due date at end of term.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in education and at least three years of teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the content area of the license being supervised.
  • Demonstrated ability to use technology platforms such as Canvas, Sibme, CAP Online, and SSU email with confidence, and a willingness to attend on-going training and to learn new platforms, as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively in a compliance-oriented environment, receiving and acting upon directions that comply with MA teacher licensure requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience giving actionable feedback to improve teaching and student learning.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency on performance task prior to assignment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the Massachusetts Rubric for Teacher Evaluation
  • Experience supervising student teachers
  • Experience working with diverse teacher candidates and/or student populations
  • As an emerging Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), Salem State University seeks to enrich the faculty/librarian ranks by actively encouraging candidates whose lived and scholarly experiences directly address issues regarding the health, welfare, and representation of Latinx populations in the United States. Candidates who meet this strongly desired qualification should present documented activities in Latinx-related teaching, scholarship/research, and service, including community-based endeavors in each of these three areas.
