About the Department

The Proposal Development Unit (PDU) supports faculty teams in the development of large-scale, interdisciplinary research proposals. These services include team facilitation, budget development, writing and editing, and administrative assistance — enabling investigators to concentrate on the research-related aspects of their proposals. PDU support is available to NC State faculty who are planning proposals with estimated total budgets of at least $1 million.

Essential Job Duties

NC State is seeking a dynamic Assistant Director of Life Sciences, Health, and Agriculture to join our Proposal Development Unit (PDU). This pivotal role combines strategic leadership, hands-on proposal development, and faculty engagement to enhance research success across life sciences, health, and agriculture disciplines.

Assist faculty with proposal development tasks:
  • Analysis of funding announcements
  • Consultations with faculty regarding strategies that improve their prospects for external funding
  • Strategic planning and facilitation of collaborative proposal concepts using team science strategies
  • Budget development and budget justification
  • Review of proposals for compliance with sponsor requirements, federal regulations, and university policies and procedures
  • Coordination of proposal development and submission processes by working closely with faculty, college research offices, and other units of the RDO
  • Coordination of site visits and/or other follow-up inquiries post-submission
  • Provision of writing support for non-technical sections, comprehensive editorial review, and advising investigators on proposal coherency, style, and organization
  • Assistance with institutional resource template materials, and organizing and formatting proposals
  • Work with NCTraCS on assigned projects

Supervise a team of Proposal Developers and Proposal Specialists:
  • Monitor and assign work to staff members
  • Monitor project assignments and balance responsibilities
  • Mentor, guide, and discipline employees under direct supervision
  • Develop work plans and conduct performance appraisals
  • Provide salary recommendations based on performance appraisals

Implement faculty awareness and preparedness activities related to proposal development:
  • Coordinate communications regarding strategic research funding opportunities, including the development and dissemination of funding-related information to the NC State research community via email, newsletters, and website
  • Develop and provide seminars, workshops, and guidance materials to educate faculty and staff regarding grant writing techniques and strategies
  • Assist with the identification and development of teams of faculty to pursue large, multi-disciplinary funding opportunities

Assist the Executive Director for Proposal Development:
  • Develop and implement new policies, procedures, and practices in the PDU
  • Evaluate PDU outcomes, plan future directions, and coordinate with other ORI units to implement ORI’s and NC State’s strategic plans
  • Promote organizational resiliency through shared responsibilities, cross-training, and other forms of staff development

Minimum Education and Experience

  • A baccalaureate degree and demonstrated five years of professional experience in developing and preparing federal research grant proposals.
  • On an exceptional basis, alternative or equivalent professional experience may be substituted for applicants with an advanced degree.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to work and lead in team-based environment to achieve common goals
  • Demonstrated excellent project management experience in working with multidisciplinary faculty teams and partners with emphasis on strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong proofreading and editing skills, with attention to detail
  • Experience in reviewing proposal sections and documents, including writing non-technical sections of a proposal, to meet the requirements of a solicitation
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills in managing and coordinating interdisciplinary faculty teams
  • Ability to prioritize and complete multiple, complex, multidisciplinary projects, with demonstrated ability to work and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite programs, Google docs, and internet applications
  • Prior supervisory and mentoring experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced graduate degree (masters or higher)
  • Familiarity with land grant research university organizational structures and sponsored programs regulations
  • Experience in developing and delivering training on proposal development topics
  • Familiarity with federal sponsors’ funding priorities and NC State research strengths
  • Demonstrated experience in developing federal research grant proposals, particularly to NIH and other sponsors that fund health-related research and training programs
