Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Office of Multi-ethnic Student Education (OMSE) offers a variety of services and programs to enhance the academic experience of diverse student populations at the University of Maryland. The mission of OMSE is to serve undergraduate multi-ethnic students to increase rates of matriculation, retention, graduation, and overall GPA. As an academic unit under the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI), OMSE recognizes the value of the multiple histories, beliefs and ethnic backgrounds of our students and works with faculty and staff to support ethnic diversity and inclusion at the university.

OMSE Academic Excellence Society (OAES) is an honor society within OMSE for multi-ethnic students. To be eligible for induction, students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and completed 30 credit hours. Freshmen students are not eligible for this program. Students are inducted into OAES each fall semester upon confirming their eligibility and paying their membership dues. To maintain active membership, students are required to fulfill their passbook requirements for the academic year:
  • Attend all OAES General Body Meetings (GBMs)
  • Attend all University Partner Program (UPP) Workshops
  • Fulfill and complete point requirements in five categories:
  • Service to Society (1/semester)
  • Social (2/semester)
  • Professional Development (2/semester)
  • Diversity (2/semester)
  • Service Learning (1/semester)

The graduate assistant for OMSE Academic Excellence Society (OAES) will provide structured support services to participants in the OMSE Academic Excellence Society. This position will report to the director and program coordinator and support the program as follows:
  • Facilitating OAES program curriculum as advised by OMSE staff and supervisor;
  • Attending and facilitating all key OAES meetings and events (e.g. General Body Meetings, Executive Board Meetings, Pinning Ceremony, and cross program events);
  • Overseeing and mentoring student Executive Board (eboard), facilitating eboard progress reviews;
  • Updating and managing program database to track student progress and program requirement completion;
  • Submitting weekly program reports and bi-annual assessment data;
  • Facilitating OAES summer recruitment outreach, meetings, and planning;
  • In collaboration with others, monitoring program budget and OAES inventory (e.g., program marketing incentives);
  • Submitting all required internal forms and requests in a timely manner;
  • Attending mandatory and non-mandatory meetings, trainings, and events as requested;
  • Providing coverage at and support with OMSE Signature events, including but not limited to, Meet and Greet, Giving Day, Academy of Excellence Awards (AAEA), Maryland Day, Homecoming;
  • Serving as a goodwill ambassador and disseminating information about OAES and OMSE programs throughout the university community; serving as a liaison to students and campus partners;
  • Working all scheduled in-person office hours at Hornbake office; and
  • Other related duties as assigned.

This graduate assistantship will require weekly evening coverage and occasional weekend work.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Must be a registered full-time graduate student in good standing enrolled in a degree program at the University of Maryland, College Park and must be making satisfactory progress toward the degree.

Experience:
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership and program facilitation, mentoring experience is a plus.
  • Experience collecting and/or reporting statistics and tracking program data for weekly reports, and internal database tracking.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of MS Office (e.g., Powerpoint, Word, Excel), Zoom, ELMS, Google Suite (e.g., Docs, Sheets, Gmail).
  • Knowledge of using Canva, Photoshop, or similar publishing/design software for creating and marketing materials.
  • Excellent communication skills including writing, editing, speaking/facilitating and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and technical skills.
  • Strong detail-oriented and strong time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Continuity for 2+ years in the position is desirable
  • Candidate must be able to work in-person at the OMSE Offices on campus Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting marginalized and historically underrepresented student populations and community members.
  • Passion for supporting programs and resources for multi-ethnic students in higher education, demonstrated history working with students from diverse backgrounds and with varied skill levels.

Additional Information:

  • This is a 10-hour per week, 12-month graduate assistantship. Some weekend and evening hours (4:30pm-9:00pm) may be required to support meetings/events.

Physical Demands

Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment. Regularly required to communicate and exchange information and to use technology/devices. Must have the ability to lift and deliver small carry parcels, packages and other items. With notice, must have the ability to attend events after normal business hours. Must have the ability to travel to meetings, events, etc. both on and off campus.
