POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Department of Physiology & Membrane Biology at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, seeks to hire one individual as an Assistant Researcher to advance our pioneering projects in precision medicine. This role demands a deep understanding of Transcriptome Analysis, Genetics in Disease, Prediction in Disease, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Machine Learning, Whole-genome Analysis, and Network/System Biology. The successful candidate will be instrumental in pushing forward our initiatives to develop targeted therapies and personalized medicine strategies.
The Professional Researcher develops and oversees their own independent, creative, and high quality research program equivalent to that required for the Professor series. The Professional Researcher takes major responsibility and leadership for their program(s). Generally, the appointee is expected to secure funding as a Principal Investigator, but may be funded as a co-PI within a large center or collaborative program grant on which many independent investigators are working, as long as it is clear that the activities led by the professional researcher within the larger project constitute his/her own independent research program. Appointees do not have teaching responsibilities.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES BELOW
- Transcriptome Analysis and Computational Approaches: Leverage expertise in transcriptome analysis to decode gene expression patters across various human diseases, essential for biomarker identification and understanding disease pathways.
- Genetics in Disease and Phenotype Interactions: Employ multifaceted approaches to explore the interactions between genetics and phenotypes, revealing genetic variations that influence disease susceptibility, progression, and treatment responses.
- Prediction in Disease, Particularly Post-Stroke: Utilize early gene expression data to develop predictive models for stroke outcomes, significantly enhancing patient management and identifying individuals who could benefit from early interventions.
- Bioinformatics and Big Data Analytics: Manage and analyze large-scale genomic and transcriptomic datasets, developing and applying advanced pipelines for data analysis, variant discovery, and network biology insights.
- Machine Learning for Bioinformatics: Apply machine learning techniques, particularly using the Sklearn package, to extract data-driven insights, predict disease trajectories, and optimize personalize treatment plans.
- Transcriptomic and Whole-Genome Analysis: Conduct comprehensive studies using tools for transcript analysis and whole-genome sequencing, focusing on eQTL and disease-associated variants.
- Network/System Biology: Utilize tools like WGCNA for network biology analyst to investigate complex biological system interactions, crucial for understanding diseases at a systemic level.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals as senior author
- Prepare reports on research findings
- Acquire funding to support an independent research program
- Manage the budget and the project according to sound management principles
- Mentor employees paid on the budget
- Write and submit progress reports to funding agencies
- Train, consult with, and advise graduate students and post-doctoral researchers with regard to experimental design and data analysis of studies conducted in his or her area of expertise
2. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY( 5 % EFFORT)
The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to their specific field and will serve as a reviewer of research proposals, and scientific publications as appropriate. The candidate will attend seminars to present research results and give research presentations at national and international scientific meetings. When appropriate, the candidate may be requested to coordinate seminars and laboratory meetings.
3. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE ( 5 % EFFORT)
The candidate will engage in University service activities such as guest lecturing and committee service. The candidate will also engage in public outreach activities that include presenting scientific research results to the general public and providing relevant advice to individuals or public agencies.
- This recruitment is conducted at the assistant rank. The resulting hire will be at the assistant rank regardless of the proposed appointee’s qualifications.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Ph.D. and robust background in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology
- Expertise in transcriptome analysis, genetic research, predictive modeling, and machine learning.
- Strong track record in handling big data and conducting holistic biological analyses
- A record of leadership, or potential for, in research and creative activity of high quality and significance, independence, and productivity
- Demonstrated potential to establish and sustain extramurally funded research programs
- Evidence of academic accomplishment such as refereed journal papers and conference presentations
