Research Assistant I - Molecular & Cellular Oncology
Job Description
The Department of Molecular and Cellular Oncology (MCO) advances basic, translational and clinical efforts to make MD Anderson the number one cancer research center. The department's oncology-driven research focuses on fundamental mechanistic discoveries and their translation to humans. As a basic science department at MD Anderson, the department strives to enhance basic research excellence by establishing a robust research group focused on the molecular and cellular aspects of cancer research, particularly in signaling pathways and crosstalk between tumor and tumor microenvironment in tumor initiation, progression and metastasis, and resistance to various therapies. The department also hosts MD Anderson's Functional Genomics Core with the support of the Cancer Center Supporting Grant (CCSG). In addition, departmental faculty are core members of the Cancer Biology and Metastasis Program of CCSG, rated "exceptional" in the last competing renewal.
Molecular & Cellular Oncology
KEY FUNCTIONS
Conducts Research Experiments and Projects
- Maintains transgenic mouse models as instructed.
- Performs genotyping of toe or tail biopsy samples.
- Learns and conducts animal manipulation techniques including blood collection, animal immunization with DNA vaccine using electroporation, drug treatment through oral gavage/IP/IV injection.
- Assist with animal surgeries, including SQ and orthotopic injections.
- Performs biochemical and molecular biology experiments when needed.
Operates Laboratory Apparatus and Equipment
- Learns equipment and relevant software needed to carry out experiments and general laboratory maintaining/cleaning.
Data Gathering and Analysis
- Use computer software efficiently for accurate data acquisition, analysis, reporting and presentation.
- Accurately records and evaluates data in accordance with methods requested.
- Maintain inventories, keeping precise, timely and accurate records.
General Laboratory Duties
- Prepares reagent stocks as directed by supervisor and postdoc fellows.
- Assumes shared responsibility for general laboratory maintenance by:
- Maintains procedures and protocols that ensure the quality and integrity of procedures performed
- Monitors work flow as it pertains to the need for supplies, equipment maintenance and preparation of stock solutions
- Keeps ample stock of supplies on hand
- Follows up on orders to ensure organization and accessibility of all reagents
Education
Required: Bachelor's degree, major course work in one of the basic sciences.
